Artist Bio
Cathal enjoys a varied career between Ireland and the UK. He has been offered trials for positions with the Ulster Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and has been invited to play as Guest Principal Clarinet of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Cathal’s playing can be heard on BBC Radio 3 and RTÉ Lyric FM, and he has featured at the Edinburgh International Festival, West Wicklow Festival in Ireland, Tunbridge Wells International Music Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe and Madrid a Tempo in various guises including with chamber groups Buccleuch Duo and Triskelion.
Cathal has a passion for commissioning works from underrepresented backgrounds, and has premiered works for bass clarinet by Ivette Herryman Rodriguez and Aidan Teplitzky.
During the pandemic, Cathal travelled to Sweden and took lessons with Emil Jonason, former Concertgebouw principal clarinet Andreas Sundén and Martin Fröst.
Cathal is a D’addario Artist, and performs on the Reserve Classic line of reeds. He is a recipient of the Dunbar Gerber award for chamber music and Jury Prize at the Irish Freemason’s Young Musician of the Year.
